NCDCTA Eventing

NCDCTA Eventing is in an exciting transition!

2017 is going to be a great year for Eventing in North Carolina and at NCDCTA. We have great facilities that put on world-class events. Carolina Horse Park is hosting the Carolina International CIC and Horse Trial in March. Tryon International Equestrian Center is hosting both the Fork Horse Trials CIC 3* and HT in April and the AECs in September. We also have local farms that sponsor horse trials and Combined Training schooling shows almost every weekend.  Please get involved with the local events either as a competitor or volunteer. It takes many volunteers to run an event and consistent support of competitors for the local shows to continue to be successful. Please feel free to send comments and suggestions throughout the year so we can make 2017 a great year.

Looking forward to a safe and successful year,

Amy HowesI am an adult amateur who has competed in Eventing for the past 9 years. I participated in Eventing in Pony Club for several years when I was a junior, but most of my experience is as an adult. I competed for many years as both a junior and adult in the hunter/jumper/equitation rings, and currently hold an NCHJA “C” judges card.  I still compete some in the jumper ring and judge local C rated and schooling shows. My true passion is the sport of Eventing. I also work as a physical therapist.

My husband Don and I have a farm in Hillsborough. We enjoy fox hunting and Eventing together. This year I will be competing my two thoroughbreds, Highly Discreet (Milo) in Training and Ramblin’ Rosie in Beginner Novice.

Member Profile

I am Colette Leber, a 15-year-old girl from Southern Pines, North Carolina. I am currently competing at Training level.

I have been an active member of NCDCTA for six years. Being in NCDCTA has allowed me to expand outside the Eventing world and compete in recognized Dressage shows. It not only gives members the chance to compete at shows, but also recognizes people’s hard work and dedication throughout the year with the Horse of the Year awards and the Eventing medal program. Since being in NCDCTA I have accumulated my Maiden gold, Beginner Novice gold and silver, Novice gold and silver, and my Training silver Eventing medals. I have also placed second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth in the Horse of the Year.

I currently have three competition horses: Indian Summer Kaylee, The Gremlin (aka Wiley), and Fernhill Just Do It (aka Jonny). Kaylee is an 11-year-old, 15hand, Connemara mare who I have owned and competed with for almost six years. We have learned the sport of Eventing together and have successfully gone from Beginner Novice to Training Level.

Wiley is a 6-years-old, 15hand, Welgian (Welsh x Belgian) who my mom originally bought for herself. Since he was very green I decided to take him over for a few months to continue his training and give him some show experience. Last year he was Reserve Champion in the NCDCTA Junior Maiden Eventing division and was only three points away from being champion.

Jonny is an 11-year-old, 16.3hand, imported Irish Sport Horse who I just recently bought. He has completed many FEI events in Ireland and has done two Intermediates in the US.

I have set many goals for the 2017 Eventing season and for my future. This year I hope to move up to Preliminary with Jonny and Kaylee and also qualify and compete at the AEC’s at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. I also plan on having Wiley compete at unrecognized horse trials in Beginner Novice. In 2018 my main goal is to make the North American Junior Young Rider CIC1* team with Jonny. Finally I aspire to represent the USA in the Olympics and be an international 4* event rider.
